Recently, I acquired an iMac G4 with a 30GB hard drive. To use the machine to its fullest, I swapped the hard drive from my Dell Optiplex SX270, which is 60GB. Now, my Optiplex has a 30GB hard drive and is out of an OS.
I had gotten tired of Windows 2000 due to the lack of DOS support and its general instability. So, what to put on my Optiplex? My first choice was FreeDOS. I had been looking at it for a few years as an open-source version of MS-DOS. My main issue with it on this machine, however, was the lack of drivers for USB and Ethernet. I had no internal floppy drive, and my USB one wouldn't work (obviously). So what was the next choice? Linux.
But what distro? Archlinux doesn't support 32bit processors anymore (without the 32bit branch), and very few distros natively support 32bit nowadays. I decided to lose the high amount of customizability of Archlinux for the ease of install and native 32bit support. I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting some graphics issues that have to do with my monitor, but I should have another post soon detailing my progress.
